CAIN, HENRY - Funky Organization of Henry Cain

During the David Axelrod craze this was a 2nd or 3rd tier record collectors would check for because Axelrod produced it. I thought The Funky Organization of Henry Cain would be your typical run of the mill organ Jazz album, and in many ways it is, but there are a couple times when Cain surprised me.
CHANDLER, GENE - Situation

Gene Chandler is best known for his 1962 Doo Wop classic Duke Of Earl. His career was much longer than that one song. Chandler was a mainstay of the Chicago Soul scene, and Situation was one of his more successful albums because of the hit Groovy Situation.
CHARLES, RAY - A Message From The People

Ray Charles recorded A Message From The People with his longtime friend Quincy Jones. Charles gets off to a great start with a completely re-arranged and soulful version of Lift Every Voice And Sing. Two mellower numbers, Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong and Heaven Help Us All, follow that.
GAYE, MARVIN - Marvin Gaye And His Girls

This album collects together Marvin Gaye’s recordings with Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells and Kim Weston. There are four tracks with each female artist. The songs with Wells are a little too mellow. It Takes Two with Weston finally kicks things off with its fast pace.

GAYE, MARVIN - In The Groove

In The Groove is a very solid album from beginning to end. It has one of his biggest hits, I Heard I Through The Grapevine, plus Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever surrounded by lesser known, but no less well-crafted songs.
JACKSON 5 - Goin Back To Indiana

Goin Back To Indiana was the soundtrack to a TV special featuring the Jackson 5 along with comedians such as Bill Cosby and sports stars like Rosey Grier, Elvin Hayes, and Bill Russell.
KLEMMER, JOHN - Fresh Feathers

John Klemmer is best known for his Blowin Gold LP. Other than that his albums kinda blow. The title cut is actually okay with its female chorus singing a melody before the tune takes off and Klemmer starts soloing on his sax.
MARLEY, BOB & THE WAILERS - Buffalo Soldier/Buffalo Dub

I couldn’t pass up on this 45, especially when it was pressed upon red vinyl. It was released on Rita Marley’s own label.
BROWN, JAMES - Reality

Despite the banging drum break and overall funkiness of Funky President, this LP is what most people have come to expect from James Brown’s work on Polydor.
REEVES, MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS - Natural Resources

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas was one of the many great female groups that hit it big with Motown.
TAYLOR, JOHNNIE - Just The One I’ve Been Looking For/I Got To Love Somebody’s Baby

Just The One I’ve Been Looking For is the kind of song that really defined the Stax sound.
CRUSADERS - Free As The Wind

When Free As The Wind was released the Crusaders had lost one of their original members Wayne Henderson. Still working with the band however were Larry Carlton and Arthur Adams. Also appearing is Ralph MacDonald.
