ALEXANDER, MONTY - This Is Monty Alexander
Verve | 1969
|
Reviewed
By: Motown67
Monty Alexander was a Jamaican born Jazz pianist. The album features a mix of Jazz and RnB. Give Me Freedom is a perfect example with a swinging bass and handclap beginning before Alexander joins in with his piano and the rest of the band. The versus and middle passage are more traditional Jazz, but I’m definitely feeling the main melody and the inclusion of congas helps as well to keep the groove going. Love Has A Way has some nice moody piano moments to it. Lay It On Me is another swinging Soul-RnB tune with a great conga dance break right in the middle. Those songs alone make up for the other tunes that are definitely on the straight and mellow tip.

GAYE, MARVIN - Marvin Gaye And His Girls
This album collects together Marvin Gaye’s recordings with Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells and Kim Weston. There are four tracks with each female artist. The songs with Wells are a little too mellow. |

HARRIS, EDDIE - Smokin
I was originally drawn to this record because of the cover. I gotta say, it’s hot with a black dude with a fro in a corner of a room, sitting on a rug with the shades drawn, his sunglasses on, playing his sax with a whiff of smoke in background. |
